Lash Technicians have their very own techniques and treatment habits, and of course their unique lash extension kits which go hand-in-hand. There are times when inconsistencies in their lash sets are inevitable for reasons such as clients who have different eye shapes. Every client is different and has unique needs and preferences. Lash Artists will be asked to work with different lengths, lash curls and of course, lash extension styles too. The right tools in your lash kit will help mitigate discrepancies and will help with consistency from client to client. Let’s explore one of the most underrated lash treatment tools available, the Lash Mirror.
Many Lash Artists will opt to apply Eyelash Extensions without a mirror, it’s common. Lashing without a mirror can be a difficult task and one that Lash Techs may not recognise as such for a long time. They may begin to wonder why a client comes back dissatisfied with symmetry or worse, a possible chemical burn.
Consider this example, a lash client comes in for a treatment and they have bulbous eyes, they’re unable to fully close their eyes during treatment creating a space between the Under Eye Patches. Or, perhaps their eyes are slightly asymmetrical and you will need to keep getting out of your chair to make sure your lash placement looks even from every angle - maybe, you don’t check at all and then wonder why lash set after lash set never looks even on some clients, or why there always seems to be a gap somewhere in the lashes. These problems may seem small, and while avoidable, can become super frustrating during long application periods and ultimately end up as unsatisfactory results for your clients.
Having a Lash Mirror at your disposal allows you to check every angle and detail of your detailed lash sets without ever leaving your chair. Referring back to the example of a client with bulbous eyes, a Lash Mirror will show you exactly how wide the gap of them not being able to close their eyes is. This will then allow you to mediate the issue, cut out the appropriate amount of thicker Foam Tape and bridge the gap for a safe lash extensions treatment to avoid any chemical burns from Lash Extensions Glue and their fume exposure.
Furthermore, the use of a Lash Mirror helps with making sure you achieve absolute symmetry as you’re able to check your progress from different angles without leaving your chair constantly, meaning that you’re able to correct any mistakes or copy the same placement when applying lashes between each eye. A Lash Mirror allows you to check how even the top line is and if there are any leaning eyelash extensions, preventing gaps in the lash set. A different perspective from another angle allows us to spot differences much easier than if we were to look at the eyelashes from only above.
Mapping eyelashes is an important step of your lash application process and we’ve discussed in detail in our blog post Why Is Mapping for Lash Extensions Important. You may be wondering how this is relevant to using a Lash Mirror?
Once you have a consultation with your client on their desired lash extensions style and you’ve given them the perfect Pre-treatment to cleanse their lashes, you’re finally ready to map. This is where your mirror comes in handy. If your client has hooded eyelids or perhaps needs a little lift to expose all the eyelashes, using a little Eyelid Tape will lift the lid enough for you to use your Lash Mirror and check for any discrepancies in the direction of natural lash growth. During your mapping you can make any adjustments if the client’s lashes are growing in different directions, you can spot these lashes easier and decide to work in isolated layers. You’ll also be able to spot any baby lashes which will help you to avoid stickies. A Lash Mirror during this planning stage is super helpful and will make your job ultimately easier, and will help you to avoid any mistakes or surprises.
So if you didn’t know before, or if you’d forgotten your handy Lash Mirror at the bottom of your lash extensions kit, now is the perfect time to reunite. Using a Lash Mirror is not an added step to your routine, it will in fact save you time from any surprise steps you will need to take if you hadn’t spotted those issues sooner.
