How To Become A Lash Technician: A Guide To Lash Courses

If you're interested in becoming a Lash Technician, you're in luck! Eyelash extensions are an increasingly popular treatment in the beauty industry, and there are plenty of opportunities for employment, whether you’d like to work in a salon or grow your own lash extension business. In this post we'll outline what you need to do to get started as a Lash Tech. We'll also provide some of our tips and tricks for succeeding in this field. So read on to learn more!

What Is A Lash Technician?

A Lash Tech is someone who applies eyelash extensions to their client's natural lashes to create a fuller, thicker look. They use a variety of lash extension application methods and types of lashes to create a bespoke lash look for every  individual client. To be a successful Lash Tech, you'll need to have a steady hand and an eye for detail in order to apply the lash extensions correctly. A lash treatment can take anywhere from 1.5-4 hours.

At the beginning of each lash extension treatment a Lash Technician will apply a pretreatment routine to the natural lashes and then carefully affix a lash extension to the individual lashes. The retention of a set of lash extensions can last anywhere from two weeks to two months, depending on the natural growth cycle of their lashes and how well clients take care of them. After an initial appointment, the client will likely need to go in for infills every 2-4 weeks in order to keep the lash extensions looking full and healthy.

How Do You Become A Lash Technician?

Becoming a Lash Tech is a great way to enter the beauty industry. Lash Artists provide an important service for their clients, and the role can be both challenging and rewarding. In order to become qualified as a Lash Tech in the UK you will need to take a lash extension course from an accredited training provider, which will provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in this field.

Lash Techs should be proficient in the use of different lash extension application techniques and be able to put their clients at ease, as the process can feel a little strange for clients who have not had this kind of treatment before.

Many Lash Artists start their careers by working in a salon as an assistant before eventually moving into a lead role. Whichever route you decide to take, if you have a passion for lashes and a desire to help others look and feel their best, then becoming a Lash Tech may well be the perfect career for you!

What Does A Lash Extension Course Involve?

Lash courses will take you through everything you need to know about applying lash extensions safely and skilfully - it is a much trickier skill to perfect than you might expect, so getting to grips with the basics under the watchful eye of a master Lash Trainer will get you started on the right foot!

Good lash courses will cover everything right from the very beginning - how to set up your beauty room so that it is safe for you and your clients, which products you’ll need for effective lash extensions treatments, how to style unique lash sets for each individual client, and will of course include some practical work to help you get to grips with the application of eyelash extensions.

You’ll need to ensure that the lash extension course you pick is accredited - it could be the most in-depth course in the world but without accreditation you simply won’t be able to get insurance for it, and you won’t technically count as a qualified Lash Tech!

Typically, lash extensions courses last for one day in the classroom (theory and practical), followed by some at-home practice work on live models, photos of which are then submitted to your Lash Trainer for feedback and assessment. Following the successful completion of these, you’ll need to take an exam and then you’ll be awarded your certificate in lash extensions! Case Studies are a very common part of lash courses because they build the student’s confidence, skills and portfolio.

Advanced lash courses are a little different - it’s quite typical for those to only take one day of tuition to complete as you’ll already have the basis of knowledge for safe working, and will simply be adding to your skill set.

What Are The Benefits Of Becoming A Lash Tech?

As a Lash Tech, you have the opportunity to help people feel their best. Whether you're working in a salon or become a mobile Lash Artist, you'll be providing an important beauty treatment for your clients. In addition to the satisfaction of knowing you've helped someone feel better about themselves, there are also many financial benefits to becoming a Lash Artist.

The average salary for Lash Techs is rising each year, and the demand for their services is always growing (at the moment you can average around £30 per hour, which works out at around £60k per year!) In addition, as a Lash Technician, you'll be able to set your own hours and schedule, giving you a great deal of flexibility and more time to spend with your loved ones.

Do You Need Insurance To Be A Lash Tech?

If you are thinking about becoming a Lash Tech, you may be wondering what kind of insurance you will need. The good news is that the insurance requirements for Lash Techs are relatively straightforward.

We suggest getting Public Liability Insurance as a Lash Technician. Public liability insurance is a type of insurance that protects business owners from being held liable for damages or injuries that occur as a result of their business operations. We’d also suggest getting Products Liability Insurance, which is a type of insurance that protects businesses against claims arising from injuries or damages caused by the products they have used or sold. Both of these types of insurance can help to cover the costs of legal defence, damages, and settlements.

In addition, it is always a good idea to have your own health insurance policy in case of any unforeseen medical problems. By taking these simple steps, you can help to protect yourself and your business.

Common Myths About Being A Lash Tech

One of the most common myths about being a Lash Tech is that you need to have perfect eyesight. While it's certainly helpful to have good vision, it's not a requirement. There are many ways to compensate for less than perfect vision, including magnifying glasses and special lighting.

Another myth is that Lash Artists only do one type of treatment. In reality, Lash Techs can be trained in a variety of different treatments, from Classic lash extensions and Volume lashes to treatments like lash lifts and tints or eyebrow lamination and tinting.

The bottom line is that there are no hard and fast rules about what it takes to be a successful Lash Tech. If you're passionate about the work and willing to put in the time and effort, you can absolutely succeed in this career!
