Happy International Women's Day! Today is the perfect time to reflect on the incredible contributions of women in various fields, including our own beloved lash industry. March 8th isn't just another date on the calendar; it's a global celebration of women's achievements, progress, and the ongoing fight for gender equality–and what better way to highlight the significance of this empowering day than to celebrate women who are shaping the beauty landscape one lash treatment at a time?
First things first, what exactly is International Women's Day? Well, it's a day dedicated to honouring the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and promoting gender equality worldwide. It's a day to celebrate the progress we've made, acknowledge the challenges we still face, and inspire action to create a more inclusive and equitable world for all. It's also an opportunity to recognise the incredible strides women have made throughout history in breaking barriers, challenging norms, and creating opportunities for ourselves and future generations.
Now, why is International Women's Day important for Lash Technicians specifically? The fact of the matter is that our profession is predominantly female-driven. From mastering the art of lash application to building successful businesses, we've proven time and time again that we're forces to be reckoned with, and we've carved out our own niche in the beauty industry. International Women's Day is an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments, support female Lash Technicians, and appreciate the impact they've had on their clients' lives. Someone who we believe is an incredible woman and who has contributed to a legacy of women-led businesses and creativity is our CEO and Founder, Hanna Putjato.
After gaining popularity on social media, Hanna started receiving requests from Lash Technicians for her to teach them the increasingly popular technique of Russian Volume lashes. Facing rejection from already recognised beauty academies, Hanna decided to create her very own Beauty Guild accredited lash courses. Whilst doing so, Hanna recognised that her students needed a variety of products to kickstart their lash careers, and buying single lash kits from big brands was becoming expensive! So with careful consideration, Hanna took the risk of borrowing £8,000 to invest in sourcing eyelash extension products and tools to retail. Solely juggling eBay orders, lash courses, and eyelash extension appointments whilst also building a website, Hanna decided it was time to hire her first members of staff. After hiring four Lash Techs, Hanna branded the business Lady Lash which was soon to be rebranded as London Lash - the brand you all know and love today! But our work doesn't stop there. International Women's Day also reminds us of the challenges women still face—gender bias, wage gaps, and limited access to resources, to name a few. As Lash Technicians, we have a unique opportunity to advocate for change within and beyond our industry. By supporting each other, amplifying women's voices, and fostering inclusivity, we can create a more equitable world for all.
So, how can we celebrate International Women's Day as Lash Technicians? Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Support Women-Owned Businesses: Show some love to your fellow female entrepreneurs and other women-owned businesses in the beauty industry. Whether it's purchasing products from women-led brands or collaborating with other female Lash Technicians, let's lift each other up and empower one another.
Empower Your Clients: Use your platforms to educate and empower your clients about the importance of women's rights and gender equality. Share inspiring stories, and resources, or host events that promote female empowerment and solidarity.
Mentorship and Education: Mentorship plays a crucial role in helping other women succeed in our industry, so pay it forward by mentoring and sharing your knowledge with aspiring Lash Technicians or connecting with other women in the industry. Consider offering workshops, hosting webinars, or simply providing guidance and encouragement to those who are just starting out. Sharing your expertise, experiences, and advice can help to empower the next generation of Lash Technicians and beauty professionals.
Give Back to the Community: Use your talents to give back to your community in meaningful ways. Consider donating a portion of your proceeds to support women's causes or volunteering your time at women's shelters or local charities. Your kindness and generosity could really make a world of difference in someone's life.
Celebrate Each Other: Celebrate the incredible women in your life – your colleagues, clients, friends, and family. Let them know how much they inspire you and how grateful you are for their support. After all, it's our collective strength and resilience that makes International Women's Day so special.
Advocate for Change: Take a stand against gender inequality. Use your platform to advocate for fair wages, equal opportunities, or better working conditions and support initiatives that empower women in the beauty industry. Together, we can drive positive change and create more inclusivity for future generations.
Self-Care and Reflection: Lastly, don't forget to take some time for self-care and reflection on International Women's Day. Celebrate your achievements, set new goals, and reaffirm your commitment to making a positive impact as a Lash Technician and as a woman. You deserve to be celebrated too!
Remember, International Women's Day is not just a day—it's a movement. So come together and take a moment to recognise the incredible contributions of women in our industry and beyond. Let's use International Women's Day as an opportunity to celebrate our achievements and continue to inspire, empower, and uplift each other as we strive for a more inclusive and equal world.
Here's to strong women — may we know them, may we be them, and may we support them every step of the way. Happy International Women's Day!
